Cyber Musings: Chatter in the Cyberspace
Raving blog sites:
Talking Points Memo - Winning an award (George Polk Award) and making the Government Back down, Joshua Micah Marshall rambles from blogging to legal reporting on web with coverage of eight US attorneys. Marshall says of bloggers: “I think of us as journalists; the medium we work in is blogging. We have kind of broken free of the model of discrete articles that have a beginning and end. Instead, there are an ongoing series of dispatches.” To scores of bloggers, it was a case of local boy makes good as Marshall started as a blogger, became a full time online Journalist. As reported to New York Times about the site stats, Mr. Marshall said that on average over the last 18 months, the sites have had 400,000 page views a day. He put the number of unique visitors a month at 750,000. Majority of the funds came through ramblings of the blog, donations and ad revenue.
Dooce is yet another blog who is written by Heather Armstrong. A 32 year willowy blonde whose site was recently estimated $40,000 a month in advertising revenues with over 4 million page views. She acknowledges being fired by her Boss for blogging as it included stories of workplace. Blogger Catherine Sanderson claims to have been “dooced” as – the New Media term for getting fired for what you write in a blog. A ‘Bridget Jones’ Blogger fire Fury as this British Secretary working in Paris was fired by her Paris Employer who objected to her weblog.
